Painted Ladies
The Painted Ladies, otherwise known as “Postcard Row,” are a series of colorful Victorian mansions, and probably the most famous houses in San Francisco. Because of their unique architecture, not to mention the million-dollar view in the background, the Painted Ladies are voted as one of San Francisco’s best attractions, year after year. So…need we say more?
Well, we will. Best visited during the afternoon when the lighting is ideal, the Painted Ladies, or Seven Sisters, were constructed in the early 1900s in the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture.
But what made the houses famous — beside the fantastic view of downtown and the Transamerica Pyramid in the background — is American pop culture.
Numerous TV shows, movies and advertisements have used the Painted Ladies for backdrops. For our generation, probably the most famous is the opening credits of television’s “Full House,” where Danny Tanner and the family throw a football in Alamo Square. But others, including flicks The Five-Year Engagement and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, have used the scenery as well.

Today, mostly seen in postcards and Facebook profile picture updates, the Painted Ladies are a treasure of San Francisco just waiting for you. Of course, other Victorian houses exist in San Francisco and are cool to see, but if you want to view the best and most famous, walk to Alamo Square for your peek at the Ladies.
How Do I Find the Painted Ladies?
- The Painted Ladies are located on the corner of Hayes and Steiner Streets. You can Google Alamo Square to find the Ladies too.
- You can use public transportation routes 5, 5L, 21, 22, 24. You can also ride a bike, taxi or Uber here. If you walk, be prepared for it to take longer than you think.
- To reach the Painted Ladies from Union Square you can ride most of the above bus lines (30 minutes), bike ride or Uber. Because the houses are near the top of a hill, BART and many other transportation routes CANNOT reach the Ladies.
- Other notable attractions near the Painted Ladies are Hayes Valley, the Biergarten, Smitten Ice Cream, Haight Ashbury, Divisadero Street, City Hall and several dogs running around Alamo Square you can attempt to pet.
